The Hidden Track

Congratulations, Reader. What would an album be without a secret, hidden track? Unposted on Facebook, the story of another album that impacted my life.

Day 11. Liz Phair – Exit in Guyville

She said she wanted to make me dinner.

And would I please come over.

I was 26. These were the days before ‘Netflix and Chill’, so although I thought there might be a little canoodling, I did sincerely think I was going over to eat.

I was, admittedly, naïve. Just starting to get comfortable with my adult and newly-single self, I wasn’t used to women really liking me and not just being in the ‘friend-zone’ kind of liking.

Denim rubbing on denim, she was straddling me, as we made out like teenagers in a basement with parents upstairs.

“I’m going to play you my favourite album” she said. And she jumped off my lap and put on this CD.

It starts out with a slow, piano-only ditty as Liz Phair, in monotone, recites:

He said he liked to do it backwards
I said, “That’s just fine with me,
That way we can fuck and watch TV.”

Oh, shit. I swallowed hard. This girl meant business. Did I have enough game for this?

And this is how it went for what seemed like hours as the CD played on repeat.

She would take a quick break from our long, slow, hungry kisses, and would sing the lyrics to me. Flipping her long dark hair from her face as she did, she looked me right in the eyes and sang. She looked like a rock star. And I had my own front row seat. An audience of one.

You walk in clouds of glitter and the sun reflects your eyes
And every time the wind blows, I can smell you in the sky
Your kisses are as wicked as an F-16
And you fuck like a volcano, and you’re everything to me

Ah, the innocence of rock, your 20s, and the early days of a relationship before the real you shows up and ruins it all.

But what a first listen.

I don’t remember if we ate.
