Babies R Us ‘Baby Talk’
Mar 2012 02

Neil Blewett is one of my favourite writers in town. First, he’s a super good guy. But also, he’s a baseball fan. So y’know, 2 for 2 right there (that’s a baseball reference for the 98% of you that hate baseball).

On the professional side, Neil is a great example for the students I’m teaching at OCAD. He started off as an intern at CP+B (when it was Zig still). I was there at the time and since leaving, have enjoyed seeing Neil get hired, and grow into a great copywriter. This is the first time we’ve worked together as I’m on the other side now and it was fun to get this script and help him make come to life.

Oh, and Go Jays.

This script was a welcome challenge.

A crazy dad, reggae music, nuclear warning horn and an announcer that breaks the fourth wall. What’s not to like as a director?

I couldn’t wait to produce it. Thanks to a great script, as always by Gerald Kugler and Mark Puchala. And a crazed performance from Jamie Watson.

This one was fun to direct.
Our talent, Trek Buccino, was amazing as always, but I felt like he wasn’t sounding hyperactive enough. Remember when you’d unwrap presents like a crazed lunatic? To give him that ‘kid whose been freebasing sugar’ sound, I made him run two laps around our offices and then run into the booth to deliver his lines. Voila.

A fun script from Gerald Kugler and Mark Puchala at CP+B.

What if an ordinary pair of bookends became so famous they were sold for $1,000,000 that went to charity?

That’s the idea driving Celebrity Bookends, an experiment in pop cultural fame and philanthropy, as thought up by Michael Clowater of BBDO Toronto.

So far the bookends have been photographed with Danny DeVito, Bill Fichter, Constance Zimmer of Entourage, and The Wire’s Lance Reddick.

Can dating a Kardashian be far behind?

KIA ‘Job Done’

When you get a script and both characters are normal, there’s only one thing to do:
Make one of them sound neurotic. In this case, we chose the customer and turned her into a KIA Groupie.

She sounds just unhinged enough.
