I worked on IKEA print for 3 years. If there was a double page spread in Canada for IKEA in the mid 2000s, chances are you were reading my wordcraftingness.
Fine, so that’s not a word.

It’s played in 12 countries that I know of.
It’s definitely overplayed in this one.

And it was a lot of fun to make.

I guess people like it cause at one point or another in our shopping lives, we’ve all had that feeling that we just got away with something.

As a sidenote, somewhere I have an alternate, failed cut where a stunt woman jumps through the car window to hasten the getaway — she actually broke her nose on one take, smacking it on the stickshift.

Most countries that picked it up ran the original or dubbed it. But Turkey had to be different.
They reshot it.

And so did France.

As I post this, it’s nearing Christmas 2010 so it’s the season to be jolly.
This first one is a holiday spot I wrote a few years back and it was definitely with my um, difficult, mom in mind. My cousin in Calgary heard it and not knowing I worked on IKEA, actually told me it reminded her of our family. Better than any award.

But wait, it won some anyway.

As for this second spot, the voice of ‘Grandad’ was provided by the great Rummy Bishop, cousin to Rat Packer Joey.

Don’t write a spot with kids or animals. Too much can go wrong.
Can’t remember who set those rules but Marketa Krivy and I gambled by breaking the first one. Luckily we had a great director in David Wellington.

If you know Marketa, ask her to do her impression of a six-year old that spawned the script. Slays me everytime.

A simple idea: When the new IKEA stuff comes out, adults act like kids in a candy store.
